Dr. Levin graduated with honors from Emory University in 1968, and earned his degree in dental medicine from the University of Pennsylvania in 1972, where he was a member of the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honor Society. After completing his post-doctoral residency in endodontics at the University of Pennsylvania, he became a Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics (AAE) and a member of the College of Diplomates. Dr. Levin served as Co-Chair of the Joint Special Committee of the American Association of Endodontists and the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology on Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) and has rejoined the committee to update the position paper.  Dr. Levin is the AAE’s representative to the Alliance for Radiation Safety in Pediatric Imaging – the Image Gently Alliance.

He speaks both nationally and internationally on CBCT, advanced endodontic technologies, diagnosis, treatment planning, and clinical techniques. At the University of Pennsylvania, School of Dental Medicine, he received the Alumni Award of Merit, served as Chair of the Board of Overseers from 2004-2008, is an ex officio member of the board, and is currently Chair of the Dean’s Council.  Dr. Levin is an Adjunct Professor of Endodontics at the University of Pennsylvania, School of Dental Medicine, Adjunct Associate Professor, Department of Endodontics, Nova Southeastern University, College of Dental Medicine. At the University of Maryland, College of Dental Medicine, he is Clinical Associate Professor in the Division of Endodontics, Periodontics and Operative Dentistry.

He is a contributor to Editions 8-11 of “Pathways of the Pulp,” Editions 6-7 of “Ingle’s Endodontics,” and “Cone Beam CT: Oral and Maxillofacial Diagnosis and Applications,” as well as author of numerous peer-reviewed articles. Dr. Levin was a keynote speaker at the 61st American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology Congress and a panelist at the 2010 American Dental Association Open Clinician and Science Forum on CBCT. Dr. Levin currently serves as a member of the Scientific Advisory Panel of the Journal of Endodontics, serves on the Continuing Education Committee of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology and is included in the Recommended Speakers List of the American Association of Endodontists and the Seattle Study Club Speakers Bureau. He is the Managing Director of EndoNet Consulting, LLC, a technology and teaching consultancy located in Chevy Chase, Maryland.

Archaeologists and an interdisciplinary team of researchers are studying the skull and dentition of a 15-year-old boy (1225B) who appears to have been the victim of a battle with Native Americans during the initial settlement at Jamestown in 1607. Specimens recovered from the boy’s teeth and jaws yield clues about diet and other aspects of daily life in the 17th century.Detailed study of the remains began with the morphological and temporal study of the skull and teeth using Cone-Beam computed tomography, intraoral radiography, micro computed tomography, scanning electron microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. The exposed root canal of the mandibular left central incisor and nearby carious lesion provides a unique repository of particulate matter in the oral cavity and associated intra-alveolar periapical lesion. This research shows how advanced technologies can be used to characterize aspects of life and the disease state of skeletal remains.
